Farm the District is run by volunteers.

Alexander Currey

Alexander is a brand strategist by day and a community builder by night. He grew up planting tomatoes, pole beans, and okra. Now he grows many of the same crops with Farm the District. Alexander helps to coordinate farming operations, lead volunteer hours, and manages much of the Farm the District communication. He also leads community events at the garden around meditation, music, and play.

Riley Sloan

Riley has a history with political organizing and community-building projects. For his wage job, he works as a grant writer for local nonprofits at Oryx Solutions. At other times, Riley is the Vice President of the U Street Neighborhood Association; a founding member of ReDelicious, DC’s new cooperative focused on food waste reduction and citizen science, and exasperated cat dad. Riley is on a lifelong quest to learn hard skills after a liberal arts education in political science and environmental studies.

Pele Solell

Pele is a primary health care provider and yoga teacher with a strong passion for community gardening. She sees gardening as a way to support fresh food access, nutrition, creativity, outdoor engagement, and lifelong learning. As a member of the Farm the District leadership team, Pele helps lead volunteer hours, manages much of the garden’s herbs, and oversees the email listserv.

Chris Wingate

Co-Founder

Chris is a geographer at the US Census and an avid gardener. He co-founded Farm the District with Kate in 2022. He comes from a long line of farmers and coo-owns the family farm in Peru.

Kate Tully

Dr. Kate Tully is an Associate Professor of Agroecology at the University of Maryland. She was the Farm Manager and Community Coordinator at the Columbia Heights Green for seven years before helping found Farm the District.
